Poll : 02 January - 15 January 2019

Q:

We last ran this poll more than four years ago and we're looking to see if you've changed your Vegas visiting habits. This will be highly instructive to us in terms of our own projections of visitor counts this year.

The question is: How many times do you plan to visit Las Vegas in 2019?

As you can see, we altered the trajectory of the selections based on the valuable feedback we received from many of you in last week's poll preview. This is now a three-part poll: The first answer is how many times you plan to visit; the second part is if it's the same as, or more or less than, in recent years; and the third is if the length of visit(s) is the same as, or longer or shorter than, previously.

I's impossible to overstate our gratitude to those of you who offer suggestions to improve these polls. You make them so much better! (And if you missed the recent QoD about the impact these polls have on us here at Las Vegas Advisor and in greater Vegas, you can read it here.)

Finally, thanks in advance to everyone for voting and commenting.

Analysis

Obviously, most visitors are sticking to their regular schedules for their visits to Las Vegas: The length of visits for nearly 1 in 5 respondents will remain the same.

But more people are planning fewer visits than in previous years than are planning the same number of visits. We didn't ask why in the survey, but by reading the comments, one might infer that all the fees, reduced comps, and Boyd's new players club situation are discouraging visits by regulars and long-timers. Only 3% of those voting will be making more visits than in previous years.

Interestingly, virtually the same percentage of respondents will visit once as twice in 2019. The numbers for three, four, and more visits drop significantly from there.

Finally, only 1% of respondents live in Las Vegas. The nature of the poll certainly discouraged Las Vegans from voting, but it still shows that most of our readers and participants are out-of-towners -- which has held true for our entire existence.

    Twice.
Once in March and one in October.
I will visit more often because I have more disposable income.

    trips
used to average 3-4 trips a year but life got busy, so now my 4 planned trips is just going back to normal.

  • Patrick Jan-02-2019
    No changes
I will do my usual 2 trips from the East Coast. Usually stay 3 or 4 days at a time. Once in spring and once in summer it early fall.

    one missing box?
In the part where you ask more or fewer visits. what about same number of visits? You have longer, shorter same length, but not more, fewer, same number. Now, my comment. We PLAN on visiting once a year and that still holds, but sometimes circumstances get us there more than once and sometimes not at all, but the initial plan has not changed. Same with length of stay, but 2 things have changed over the past few years. Instead of exclusively staying in Vegas, we spend part of most trips in Laughlin. It doesn't change our visits, except we have spent less days in Vegas even though we spend the same amount of time in Clark County. We used to spend a couple of days in Vegas both coming and going to California, and now we go by way of Laughlin one of the ways.

    PLAN??
I PLAN to visit twice this year - April & September, as usual BUT it all depends on Boyd invitations. In the past 10 years or so a friend and I have been invited for 3 free days each and put them together for a great 6 days visit almost exclusively at Boyd properties. It's looking like they're not going in that direction anymore, so I will not be coming at all, I have NO interest in shopping at Macy's or anywhere else when I go to Vegas. I go there to gamble in casinos that are well regulated by the state. If my old friends at Boyd's don't want to offer me three days free so be it. I won't come at all.I don't drink or smoke and I'm a small eater, BUT I tip well and am a very pleasant person to all employees, so if this is my thanks for many years of loyalty then count me out!! Del

Right. Thanks for pointing out the missing selection. It's been added to the poll.

    Longer visit
I live on the East Coast. Last year a friend spent the winter in Las Vegas; I drove out and joined her for five weeks. Soooo happy I did. Weather was incredible and the extended stay gave me time to visit places and do things that I never had time for during previous, shorter stays.
This year I'm going earlier and staying longer. Can't wait! 😁

    No More
22 trips to Las Vegas since 1999 came to a halt with escalating resort fees and parking fees. I now make more visits to casinos within my state of Michigan or adjoining states.

Plan on going twice this year, a lot less than in the past
I have a trade show in March that I plan to attend, and will probably come back in December, right before Christmas.

used to come more often but Paid parking, higher resort fees and poor odds on Blackjack and video poker, have reduced my trips. Going to Shreveport a lot more than before

    6 times this year
Next week comped at the Bellagio with a fountain view room.

    My 30 day winter getaway
Plan on making less trips in 2019(made 8 trips in 2018), but one trip will last over 3 weeks which will be my longest trip by far to Las Vegas.

    2019 Plans
We will be visiting from the UK in February for four nights. We usually stay for five nights at least once a year. Occasionally we stay for seven nights and a couple of times since 2003 have visited twice in the same year. It's always February to April or September / October.

Coming less often due to Boyd changes
OK, this comment went on the QOD post instead of the poll itself. So I will post it here as well:

I'm close enough to visit several times a year. Over the last few years, Boyd had been giving me enough mailers and good room offers and minor perks to keep me coming. But last year's changes (unexplained) changes have screwed all that. I will never make Sapphire level so I can never earn points, can not have point multipliers. Room offers have gone from "free" to almost rack rate (including resort fees, and Boyd joints are by no means "resorts"). So for 2019, we are seeking a new casino home and will certainly visit much less often until we find one.

  • Caroline Jan-02-2019
    Only once
The comps are not what they used to be, airfare from Canada is now more expensive and with hotels nickel and dimming (and dollaring) me to death, I can only afford once

  • Ronald Vahle Jan-02-2019

I WILL VISIT LESS IN 2019 DUE TO THE ESCALATING OPOSITION TO VIDEO POKER PLAYERS. IE, BOYD CASINOS EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATING VIDEO POKER PLAYER FROM THE B CONNECTED CARD.

    PLANS
We usually go to LV twice each year: June and December. The new Boyd comp system will be a disincentive. We have been staying at MSS for the past 15+ yrs. Our current offer ending in March will go unused. Seems Boyd doesn't need the loyalty of "low(er) rollers" anymore. BUT there are still good deals down the (Fremont) street...and in Laughlin.

After over 50 trips to Vegas since 1995 we will no longer be making any trips to Vegas. We have always stayed on the strip and usually did not have to pay for any rooms. We still are receiving good offers however with no real video poker and slots so tight that the chances of playing for any amount of time, not to mention actually winning, are almost nil unless you have bottomless pit of cash. Costs for food and entertainment have risen beyond an acceptable level especially for Canadians like ourselves who have to pay a huge premium for US dollars. Slot hosts no longer appear to be interested in making our visits special as they have in the past and with all the additional fees charged now we have decided, as others have, to support our local casinos. We have great memories of Vegas and that will have to do for the future.

Won't be back for a while at least
Being disabled money is hard to come by now so there are cheaper options than Vegas. With Parking fees (which I have to pay as I am disabled and it is easier) to resort fees, etc. my local Oregon casinos are a better deal all around. I just miss the vibe.

  • Jimmmy B Jan-03-2019
Nascar both times - March & Sept
Plus going to Death Valley in a couple weeks and Grand Canyon in July. Will go to LV both times also.

Last year, I met my family in Vegas and stayed at Planet Hollywood. First time in 8 years. Had a ball. The BJ games were friendly. The food was the best ever. Made reservations for the end of March at PH. Planning going every year.

  • Andrew Karnes Jan-12-2019
    Worn out.....
I/We used to go more often but with the Resort Fees costing more than the rooms and charging for parking now, we only go once a year. We wouldn't go at all but the MyVegas game, Binion's slot game and the Comp City game freebies help out the budget making one trip affordable. The last trip seemed like it was a lot of work though running around picking up all those things though.

  • Kathy Wenzel Jan-13-2019
    Same as past years.
Same as previous years. Trips are scheduled around video poker tournaments at the Orleans.

  • Larry Brill Jan-19-2019
    Different Habits
While we may go to Vegas once or twice this year, as we normally do, our habits have certainly changed. We have stayed off-Strip for a number of years now, but we'd always go to see the Bellagio Fountains and the Conservatory each trip. We did not do that our last couple of trips - and probably won't again. Resort fees and parking fees have changed my attitude toward Vegas. It used to be a place where you could find bargains and a good time. Now, it seems very corporately run - not much in the way of bargains (loss leaders), customer service, or just plain old fun - unless you really want to pay for it! Oh, and we used to stay or at least play at the Orleans each trip, but no more! Our trips are much more relaxing now as we don't hit very many "other" casinos other than the ones we stay in (usually 2 per trip). So we spend more time doing other things in the hotel or seeing sights in and around Vegas.

Why go to Vegas at all?
You can find Casinos here in Oklahoma without having to pay an ante. 6:5 BJ unheard of here. The most liberal BJ rules on DD. One BJ game here has house edge of .59% verses 1.5% in Vegas. I believe the slots are looser here. I win on slots here. I've had several hand pays, not one in Vegas. Comps are better than Vegas. No panhandlers, timeshare hawkers, or bottle water peddlers. I use to go to Vegas 6 times a year.

I think their plan is working as planned
From the comments I have read, it seems that most complainers have been coming for several years, which would make them the older crowd. It seems that is their plan to run off the older crowd. Times have changed,if you are not willing to change you might as well stay home! I too am a senior, but I'm still young at heart, I guess that is why I still enjoy Las Vegas!!!
