Poll : 22 November - 05 December 2017

Q:

This is a yes-no poll on whether or not the mass shooting in Las Vegas on October 1 is having an impact on your plans to visit Las Vegas in the foreseeable future.

The analyses we've seen have been contradictory; some say it will have an effect on tourism, while others say it won't. So we thought we'd go directly to the source and ask.

Also, please tell us why you feel the way you do. And if you'd like to express any other sentiments about the shooting and its aftermath, feel free to do so.

A:
1551 Total Votes
The mass shooting hasn't affected my intention to visit Las Vegas.
93% (1450)
I won't be visiting Las Vegas in the foreseeable future due to the mass shooting.
7% (101)

Analysis

Obviously, the travel plans for an overwhelming majority of Vegasphiles haven't been disrupted by the mass shootings in October.

However, you'll see in tomorrow's Question of the Day, which concerns visitation statistics since the shootings, that October saw a 4.2% drop-off in visitation year over year. As Las Vegas is now on a pace to hit 42 million or so visitors in 2017, the 7% of respondents who will definitely not be visiting Las Vegas due to the events of October 1 represent nearly three million less visitors, which would drop 2017's total down to 2013's visitation, the lowest in four years. We consider that significant.

So do the large casino corporations, which, based on cancellations, are seeing lower revenues (again, you can read all about it tomorrow).

This is one of the more salient and poignant polls we've conducted recently and we deeply appreciate the votes and comments from everyone who participated.

    Fewer visits? Hardly!
Why should this event affect anyone's plans? While it was a tragic event, the reality is, it could have happened anywhere at any time.

I actually believe it would help INCREASE tourism. After all, security is heightened (albeit temporarily).

It pains me to see that anyone is suggesting that visitation may suffer as a result. Will it become a self-fulfilling prophecy? It also pains me to see that media outlets have given the event a name: "One October". Somehow giving it a name seems to validate the fears and the event itself.

Frankly, I'm sorry I wasn't in town at the time. I normally attend G2E which started 10/3. I skipped it this year. Had I attended, I would have arrived in town early in the day on 10/1. While I wouldn't have been at the concert, I wonder where I would have been when the city went into lock-down mode. Probably not in my hotel/casino. For that reason I'm glad I wasn't there. I wish I was there to have been a part of the group hugs in the following days.

    Somewhat will alter future plans.
While this won't affect my upcoming travel plans it does make me more aprehensive to come during NYE, which I am not going for this year. I was there for during the shooting and it really put a damper on the last couple of days of my trip. It was a really sad time to be in LV and it did change my plans at the time, since I didn't want to go to near the strip. I basically went downtown instead, changing my plans and cancelling a dinner reservation I had at Wynn. I heard people talking about friends and family that were at the concert and heard about their wounds just walking through the casino, quite depressing.

    What???
While atrocious and apprehensive at least long suspected terrorist attacks on Las Vegas have been proven possible and certainly heightened the need for preventive measure all I have to say about all of these terrorist measures is that it is turning us into another Israel. We are Americans and publicly armed. Personally, I'm shocked that no one shot back but then the concert in all of it's so called security banned firearms at the event. Shooting back would have made him duck for cover temporarily ceasing fire allowing more to escape or seek cover and saved lives and prevented injuries. We are allowed both open carry and concealed carry in Nevada but too many idiots irrationally in fear of guns strive too hard to limit where the guns may be carried. It is entirely the events both criminal and civil liability for preventing the legal, background checked carry of personal defense firearms at their concert and should be sued for not providing armed security.

    Return to Vegas
The recent mass shooting in Vegas cemented my resolve to come back sooner. Not only to show support for Vegas, but to not let the bad guys win.

    You bet
My friends and I were in Mandalay Bay when the shooting took place. It was the scariest experience of my life. There was no communication and no coordination - just run! There is an active shooter! We went running out through the mall to Luxor with Security telling us to run. Nobody in Luxor to tell what to do. We ended up outside behind the casino (probably not the best place to be). And finally, we were in Excalibur for their lock down. People panicking a running through the casino. Again no direct from any casino or security. Finally, we were sent to the 3rd floor and still nothing was shared with us. The only way people knew what was going on was through twitter and press reports (many of which were incorrect). I know the police were busy patting themselves on the back for how well they handled the situation, but it was a mess. And they did a poor job. I probably will not return to Las Vegas until there is stricter gun control laws (Nevada has some of the loosest).

    While in Vegas
I actually stop doing a lot of things in Vegas, we spend the winter months here. I will not go to the strip on weekends, do not attend any large outdoor events, have stopped going downtown. I pretty much have followed these 3 rules long before the latest incident.

My wife and I were in the Fremont the day of the shooting and, thankfully, life went on as usual. Have booked two more visits.

Visited and ran in the Rock-n-Roll half marathon on the 12th so "no", my plans did not and will not change.

    Marathon weekend
I was there for the Rock and Roll marathon a few weeks ago. It was a bit eerie going by the Mandalay Bay.

    coming back
The church shootings haven't stopped me from going to mine; or to concerts or movie theaters, stores, other places where sickos choose to take revenge against...something or somebody. Our free society leaves us vulnerable anywhere. Either hibernate forever, or live your life and hope for the best always.

    No Strip = No Problem
I don't fear something like this happening to me because I don't patronize the Strip and I don't attend concerts or outdoor activities. I stay & play downtown (primarily the El Cortez), and don't hang out outside with large groups. The mass-murderer shooter chose his target because there were a lot of people in one spot and they were outside with no protection from bullets speeding at them from above. And secondarily, it was located on the Strip. If a terrorist is going to target a certain place in Vegas, it will be the Strip because of the glamor and fame, similar to how 911 happened to Manhattan and no such act would befall the other boroughs. I think anyone planning to visit a major Strip hotel or event would have a concern. I don't think there's any real danger for downtown, and definitely not for "locals" hotel/casinos.

    Support Las Vegas
Altering plans would just go against what we should do in support of those that live and work there. Just like the devastating fires in Napa Valley, residents depend on visitors to come spend and enjoy themselves which helps keep the economy strong and helps normalize the lives of those that survived these tragedies. The one thing I don’t agree with is that some people are suing businesses to get rich quick off of the actions of one stupid person.

It Will Change What We Do
As someone who was accosted on a Deuce Bus years ago, I think that Vegas has gotten meaner. Belligerent drunks everywhere on The Strip and Downtown. We won't be attending any outdoor concerts or outdoor festivals. We live only 50 miles away from the City of Detroit, and we seldom go there, also. I'll let you know in the Spring.

    Visits to Vegas
In a word- No. Every year people decide not to return to Vegas, for various reasons. They are replaced by many who have never been to Vegas. There is always attrition and always will be.Vegas will be fine.

Never Let Other People Dictate Your Life
I agree with most of these comments, you let the bad guys win and control what you do. It could've happened anywhere, so live your life as you see fit, don't let others dictate where or when you go places, otherwise all you do is end up being a hermit.
