Question of the Day - 24 June 2004

Q:
What are the five most popular (crowded) dates to be in Las Vegas?
A:

The most crowded date by far is New Year's Eve. Upwards of 250,000 people jam the Strip and downtown that night and hotel rates hit the moon. It's one of the nation's biggest New Year's Eve parties and the networks have taken in the past few years to broadcasting from Las Vegas as part of their national NYE coverage.

The next two most popular dates can vary slightly in terms of visitor volume, but they're both up there in the top three with more than 200,000 visitors: the three-day Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. July 4th, if it falls in such a way that it runs over a three-day weekend, would be, appropriately, the fourth most crowded date.

The fifth date is often determined by attendance at the largest conventions or other special events. Super Bowl weekend can attract upwards of 175,000 visitors. Comdex, though no longer at its peak when it boasted 225,000, can still draw upwards of 150,000 participants the week before Thanksgiving. The National Association of Broadcasters in mid-April gets 135,000. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) sees about 120,000.
