Question of the Day - 21 July 2004

Q:
Where is the blackjack tournament with the million-dollar first prize being played?
A:

It’s at the Las Vegas Hilton and it's now in the qualifying rounds for the third annual million-dollar grand finale, to be held in April 2005. The winner of championship tournament takes home the million in cash -- no annuity -- while the next 18 players split $110,000.

Smaller monthly tournaments qualify 18 players (each) to compete for the seven-figure first prize. The entry fee is steep at $1,000, but you also get three free nights in the hotel. Champions are crowned monthly and the top 19 places split a guaranteed $57,500. But the primary objective is to finish in the top 16 and move on to the finals in April.

We've calculated the breakeven point in equity at the monthly qualifiers at 160 entrants.
