Question of the Day - 03 August 2004

Q:
Why hasn't the question I submitted to Question of the Day been answered?
A:

Good question -- though we were thinking of not answering it. (Just kidding.)

Seriously, when we introduced Question of the Day back in early May, we didn't know quite what to expect. Would anyone read them? Would anyone care? Would anyone submit?

Well, we've got our answers, so to speak, and they all point to the "stress of success." Only 10 weeks into this feature, we're now getting upwards of 20 questions for every one we can answer.

Also, we're still attempting to keep the Q's & A's more general and broad, rather than specific and technical, in this early stage of the QoD. So if you've submitted a question such as, "I've read about a few times where a slot machine 'accidentally' showed the top jackpot symbols on the payline, but in reality no jackpot occurred due to the RNG. Has there ever been a recorded instance where the RNG meant to show the top jackpot (say, Megabucks symbols) but instead showed something else? Wouldn't the player be entitled to the jackpot, and, if the machine didn't lock up, how would the player ever know?" it's less likely to be answered right away than a question like this, "Our daughter will turn 21 while we're in Las Vegas. What proof of age will she need? And is there any way to avoid her being 'carded' repeatedly (wristbands, hand-stamps, etc.)?" (This is the Question on July 28.)

Finally, just because you have a 5% shot of getting your question answered, you shouldn't be discouraged from submitting it/them. We archive every question and discuss them frequently. Often, they give us ideas for research projects, topics for the Advisor, columns and content we supply to other periodicals, etc. Your question might not be answered here, but you might see it pop up somewhere else down the road.

So keep those questions coming! And thanks for submitting.
