Question of the Day - 29 August 2004

Q:
My boyfriend wants to "skydive in a wind tunnel" on our trip to Las Vegas next month and I have no idea what he's talking about. Is there such a thing?
A:

Your boyfriend is referring to Flyaway, a thrill venue that simulates skydiving. The wind tunnel is vertical (the wind blows up instead of across), created by a DC3 propeller that turns under netting that serves as the floor of the well-padded 22-foot-tall tunnel. Flyers soar in a 12-foot-wide column of wind that can reach 130 miles per hour. Only the most experienced flyers can go all the way to the top of the tunnel at the highest speeds. Almost anyone, however, after taking the training and equipment sessions, can do a few flips and dips and rolls during the three-minute flight.

Flyaway isn't cheap: single flights costs $50; you can buy two at a time for $75 or five for $150. Flyers must weigh between 40 and 230 pounds. You're outfitted with flight suit, goggles, helmet, knee and elbow pads, etc.

It's located at 200 Convention Center Drive, tel. 702/731-4768, www.flyawayindoorskydiving.com.
