Question of the Day - 04 October 2004

Q:
What’s the casino advantage when you bet on an NFL football game?
A:

Assuming the standard arrangement where you bet $11 to win $10, the casino edge is 4.5%. This is an outstanding gambling value, given that 4.5% of $11 is just 50¢. Since it takes about three hours to play an NFL game, your mathematical "entertainment" cost works out to about 17¢ per hour. Yes, there’s a 50% chance that you’ll lose the entire $11, but it’s also 50% that you’ll walk with $10 in winnings.
