Question of the Day - 13 May 2005

Q:
What's the name of the tattoo shop at the Palms and what is the average price for a tattoo?
A:

The Hart and Huntington Tattoo Co. opened in February 2004, and to date it's still the only tattoo parlor housed within a Las Vegas casino. The brainchild of Vegas extreme motocross star Carey Hart (singer Pink’s ex), nightclub impresario John Huntington, and Palms owner George Maloof, it's located where the Palms gift shop used to be, to the right of the hotel’s front desk.

The shop is open daily from 11 am until 2 am and has three state-of-the-art tattoo stations. It has a dark lounge-ish kind of feel, with leather walls and a sound system, and sometimes features live DJs. On a recent Thursday at lunchtime it was dead, but the place gets busy in the evenings and on weekends. They don’t take appointments, so just show up. Prices are by the piece, not the hour.

The cheapest tattoo starts at $100 for simple things like Japanese kanjis, hearts, and flowers, and prices go up according to size, color, complexity, and location on the body. In terms of house rules, some of the artists won’t do hands and feet, while none will "break" the wrist or neckline unless you’re already 80% covered, as that’s considered "too much of a life-changing experience."

In addition to the body illustrations, Hart and Huntington also sells merchandise, including T-shirts and baseball caps.

As is true of most casino retail outlets, you'll pay more for products and services than you would in non-casino locations around town, and tattoos are no exception. You can get body art for significantly cheaper prices in Vegas if you don't mind venturing farther afield and, perhaps, foregoing the chic ambience. For example, Pricz Tattoo at 6985 W. Sahara and Pair-A-Dice at 304 E. Sahara both have a house-minimum of $50, while at The Skin Factory, located at 3140 S. Valley View, prices start at $40.
