Question of the Day - 04 June 2005

Q:
In 1999, you published a list of the 21 largest hotels in the world, of which 18 were in Las Vegas. With the opening of Wynn Las Vegas and some of the latest casino expansions, like Mandalay Bay and Bellagio, what’s the new list of Las Vegas’ largest? And have any big hotels been built around the world since then?
A:

Yes. The list has changed since 1999. Today, only 17 of the largest 21 hotels in the world are in Las Vegas. And the top Las Vegas hotels have been jockeying a little, with Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, and Caesars moving up substantially, thanks to their new towers. Wynn Las Vegas has been added to the list as well, knocking off the Aladdin, which is now number 22 (with 2,572 rooms).

Here’s the list of hotels and their room counts, according to a survey of each property's front desk on May 31, 2005:

1. Ambassador City, Jomtien, Thailand: 5,100 (we were told by the hotel that only 4,210 are currently in use, giving credence to the belief that they contrived their expansion simply to beat the MGM Grand to the accolade of "world's largest.") 2. MGM Grand: 5,044 (additional rooms since the opening due to the addition of the Mansion). 3. Mandalay Bay: 4,756 including Four Seasons (4,332 not including) 4. Luxor: 4,404 5. Venetian: 4,027 6. Excalibur: 3,993 (has dipped below the 4,000+ mark due to the conversion of some rooms to suites) 7. Bellagio: 3,933 8. Circus Circus: 3,765 9. Flamingo: 3,545 10. Caesars: 3,443 when new tower opens Sept. 1 (2,493 currently) 11. Hilton Hawaiian Village, Oahu: 3,386 12. Las Vegas Hilton: 3,174 13. Mirage: 3,044 14. Monte Carlo: 3,002 15. Paris: 2,916 16. Treasure Island: 2,885 17. Gaylord Opryland, Nashville: 2,881 18. Disney’s Pop Century, Orlando: 2,880 19. Bally’s: 2,814 20. Wynn Las Vegas: 2,716 21. Imperial Palace: 2,700

It's interesting to note that MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, Bellagio, Circus Circus, Mirage, Monte Carlo, and Treasure Island -- nine of the world's 16 largest hotels -- belong to the new MGM-Mirage-Mandalay Resort group, while Flamingo, Caesars, Paris, and Bally's are part of the Caesars Entertainment chain; thus, 13 of the largest 19 hotels in the world belong to only two casino corporations.

Also, except for the Las Vegas Hilton, every one of the Las Vegas hotels on the list is on the Strip: five on the south Strip; nine at center Strip; and two on the north Strip.

Finally, 20 of the world's top 21 hotels are in the United States. Hawaii and Orlando, Florida, are obvious venues, but Nashville, Tenn.? Go figure.
