Question of the Day - 18 July 2005

Q:
The current Question of the Day can be accessed by anyone visiting the site. Why do you restrict the archives to LVA members?
A:

Since its launch in 1983, the Las Vegas Advisor has been dedicated to providing the best possible information about all aspects of the Las Vegas experience. We want you to have a great time everytime you visit, so we consider it our mission to share all the information that we accumulate in the course of our research -- which helps to make your trip to Las Vegas as enjoyable and economical as possible.

Since Question of the Day was launched in 2004, it has proved to be one of our most popular features and it has always been provided free to all. However, back then we felt we didn’t have sufficient resources to do justice to QoD. It was suspended for a few months but we never stopped receiving requests to bring it back. Last spring, a new staff member was hired to do nothing but answer QoDs. As you can see when you log on each day, the level of research that goes into each answer is prodigious. And if we can’t answer the question in-house, we pay an expert to supply the definitive answer for us. Yet we’re still providing all this information every day, for free.

Of course, this "free" content is paid for by our loyal members, whose annual fees are what make LVA possible. Without them there would be no Question of the Day; there'd be no LasVegasAdvisor.com. In light of this, we feel it’s only proper that our members receive some perks, of which free access to the Archives is one. Each day we post what the next day’s Question will be, so no one who checks regularly should miss a QoD that they’re particularly interested in. If, by some chance you do, however, for $5 you can buy a three-day online membership to LVA, which gives you access to all the QoD archives, as well as the LVA archives, and access to the forums, all of which you're free to print and save.

Bottom line, LVA is a commercial enterprise and all great content comes at a price. The unprecedented research that goes into each QoD gives these answers plenty of scope for additional commercial exploitation. Since we may well want to take advantage of some of these opportunities in the future, for the time being we choose to limit the free circulation of this valuable information.

We hope this answers your question and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the positive feedback we’ve received since QoD was re-launched and for the great questions you submit. Keep ‘em coming and we’ll keep answering ‘em!
