Question of the Day - 28 July 2005

Q:
Who has the largest casino floor in the world?
A:

With 340,000 square feet of gaming space in a complex totaling 4.7 million square feet, Foxwoods in Ledyard, Conn., is not only the largest casino in the world (over twice the size of the MGM Grand -- largest in Las Vegas at 178,000), it’s also the most profitable.

Foxwoods is divided into six connecting casinos; not all six have table games, but they all have slot machines, row after mind-numbing row, upwards of 7,400 in all. There are also 380 tables, not to mention the world’s largest bingo hall. And Foxwoods boasts more than 1,400 hotel rooms plus 35 food-and-beverage and 24 retail outlets.

In February 2005, it was announced that a new $700 million expansion project, planned for completion in 2008, will add a further 825 rooms and 50,000 square feet of gaming space to the complex, in addition to extra parking, meeting and conference space, entertainment options, and food and retail outlets.

Not bad for a casino that opened in 1992 on the site of a so-called reservation occupied by a handful of remaining Pequots and a bunch of pigs.
