Question of the Day - 01 November 2005

Q:
We have family that recently moved to Las Vegas and told us about "Nevada Day," but they don't know anything about it. What and when is "Nevada Day"?
A:

Nevada Day is a state holiday that celebrates Nevada’s birthday, also known as Admissions Day. It commemorates Oct. 31, 1864, when Nevada was admitted into the Union. It officially takes place on Oct. 31, which, as you know, is tomorrow, which is why we're answering this question today; it's also, of course, Halloween.

Carson City, the state capital, pulls out all the stops for Nevada Day; the celebration culminates in a huge parade. Except when Oct. 31 falls on a Sunday and the parade is held on the Saturday before, Nevada Day always occurs on Oct. 31 itself, Halloween notwithstanding. However, the official state holiday is held on the Friday before the 31st and public schools, state offices, and most banks are closed, though the post and other federal offices aren’t.
