Question of the Day - 05 February 2006

Q:
"Must-see" Las Vegas attractions: Readers Poll results.
A:

As always, thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to our Poll, which yielded some interesting feedback. No surprise that the Bellagio fountain show was the hands-down individual winner, with 29% of the vote, followed by various takes on the view of the Strip, which weighed in with 15%. Suggested vantage points included not only the obvious ones we listed like VooDoo Lounge and the top of the Stratosphere, but also from the parking garage at Green Valley Ranch, or a nighttime helicopter ride, or the view as you fly into McCarran, or "the sunrise over the Strip from a pedestrian bridge."

Other candidates for the one "must-see" attraction included:

  • Hoover Dam (a popular runner-up)
  • Fremont Street Experience (ditto)
  • Red Rock Canyon
  • "Folies Bergère" at the Tropicana ("a chance to see a classic ‘old Las Vegas’ show, before it’s replaced with something else")
  • Venetian Hotel and Casino
  • Conservatory at Bellagio
  • Rio Seafood Buffet
  • Las Vegas Historic Museum at the Tropicana ("Why not get a taste of where Las Vegas came from, before trudging into the here and now? I truly enjoyed my visit there.")
  • Margarita Bar at Caesars Palace ("by the moving statues in the Forum Shops")
  • Dueling Pianos at Harrah’s ("free and fall-down funny")
  • Neon Museum downtown
  • The lifesize brass butts in front of the Riviera (a bas relief posed for by former Crazy Girls)
  • The Brahma Shrine outside Caesars ("it is imperative to offer a gift for prosperity")
  • Volcano at the Mirage
  • Batista’s Hole in the Wall (for those who don’t know, that’s the Italian restaurant behind the Barbary Coast)
  • A trip to the Western casino to see the "other side" of the casino industry ("I’ve taken several 'Vegas Virgins' there and they’ve never been disappointed")
  • Olympic Garden
  • "O" at Bellagio ("wonderful show!")
  • "Mystère" at TI
  • Mandalay Bay wave pool
  • MGM Grand Hotel ("that place is literally a city within a city!")
  • One suggestion: "Just take some money for the day and bottled water and take a slow walk up and down the Strip. Start at your hotel and go and be amazed! Walk in and go through each hotel or free attraction and see for yourself just what you like about that place."
  • And finally: "I would suggest visiting the area just east of the Fremont Street Experience to see the broken bodies and broken dreams lying about … Perhaps that will encourage responsibility rather than excess. But Vegas is great. Enjoy!"
