I have grandchildren visiting me here this month. Where in Las Vegas can they go horseback riding?

There are a number of horseback riding options in the Las Vegas area, but unless you’re looking for long-term lessons, your best bet will be trail riding. Below is a sampling of stables that offer guided trail rides, all located within 30-45 minutes of the Strip. Several also offer transportation to and from the stable, so if you don’t have a car, you may wish to start with those.

    Prices range from $35 for a one-hour guided tour to $135 for a two-hour Sunset Dinner ride. Children must be six or older. No reservations necessary. A shuttle service to Bonnie Springs is available through Star Land Tours; call 702/296-4381 for more information.

  • Cowboy Trail Rides/Red Rock Canyon Riding Stables Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (about 30-45 minutes from the Strip) 702/387-2457 www.cowboytrailrides.org

    Prices range from $25 for a half-hour Scout Ride to $289 for the 5-hour Wow Ride. Children must be at least seven. Transportation is included in many ride packages; call for pick-up times.

    Prices range from $25 for one hour to $399 for the Sundance Kid & Butch Cassidy Overnight Adventure. Children must be at least five, depending on the circumstances; call ahead to check on availability. Tours are available by reservation only. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are included.

  • Sandy Valley Ranch Sandy Valley, NV (about 45 minutes from the Strip) 702/631-0463 www.bossladyranch.com

    Prices range from $60 for a simple trail ride to $350 for the "Cowboy for a Day" package, which includes a trail ride, team cattle penning, lunch, a cattle drive, hors d’ouvres, dinner, a campfire with tall tales and poetry recitals, and cowboy games. Transportation is included with all packages over $300.

    Prices range from $45 for one hour to $149 for a dinner ride. Children must be at least six.
