As announced in Today's News on this site, details of the much-awaited Beatles/Cirque du Soleil show, LOVE, were finally released on April 19, 2006. The project owes its origins to a close friendship between Cirque founder Guy Laliberté and the late George Harrison, the so-called "quiet Beatle," who first suggested the idea. Harrison died in 2001 after a long battle with throat cancer, but the concept survived him and, with the support of Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono, and under the musical direction of legendary former Beatles producer Sir George Martin, the project has finally come to fruition.
The show, which features an international cast of 60, will be performed exclusively at a custom-built theater at the Mirage featuring 360° seating, a panoramic sound system, and high-definition video projections with 100-foot digital images. Details of the show itself and the songs featured have not yet been released, but according to the official Cirque Web site, LOVE "explores the content of the songs in a series of scenes inhabited by real and imaginary people" and "channels a raw youthful energy underscored by aerial performance, extreme sports, and urban freestyle dance." A press conference is scheduled for May 24, when more details and publicity photographs will be released, so we'll be posting additional information on our site as it becomes available.
From July 1, LOVE will be performed Thursday through Monday, with two shows nightly at 7:30 & 10:30 pm. Tickets can be reserved up to four months in advance and are priced at $150, $125, $99, and $69, with a 25% discount available on the preview performances, which will be presented nightly at 7 pm from June 2-29. Tickets are available online at www.mirage.com, www.thebeatles.com, and www.cirquedusoleil.com, where you can also find further information about the making of the show and view rehearsal photographs.
