Question of the Day - 23 July 2006

Q:
During a flight back home to Florida, I was wondering which state has the most vistors to Las Vegas and how all states rank?
A:

The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority publishes its figures for Las Vegas visitor demographics annually and generally gets its information for each year from the Department of Commerce in May or June of the following year, so the most up-to-date figures currently available relate to visitation in 2005.

According to the '05 Las Vegas Visitor Profile, in terms of visitor origin, the figures have stayed pretty constant over the past three years, with 88% of visitors coming from within the U.S. (compared with 87% in 2004 and 88% in 2003). Of these, 9% came from Eastern states (Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont), 13% from Southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia), and 14% from Midwestern states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin). At 52%, Western states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada -- excluding Clark County -- New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) are by far the biggest source of visitors to Las Vegas, with California alone accounting for 33% of the influx and Arizona contributing 6%.

Update 20 July 2006
Oops! Sorry, no offence meant to Texas, which should of course have been listed in there with the other Southern states. Just a slip of the mouse...
