Q:
What percentage of blackjack players are men? What about craps? What percentage of slots players are women?
A:
Interesting question, although a tricky one to answer. Fortunately, help is at hand, courtesy of Harrah"s "Profile of the American Gambler" survey, published annually. Based on two separate studies that used nationwide samples and questioned 16,437 adults who'd identified themselves as casino players, this year's project sought to identify demographic data, trends, and the habits and characteristics of America's gambling population.
The section titled "Favorite Casino Games" reveals the following information:
- Of those questioned, 63% of men chose slots/video poker as their favorite game, compared with 79% of women.
- 21% of men preferred table games in general, as opposed to only 9% of women.
- 13% of men chose blackjack as their favorite game, while only 5% of women did.
- 3% of the men liked craps best, while only 1% of women did. So, put another way, 75% of crap players are male (assuming that gamblers play the games they like best).
- 3% of men chose live poker, as did 1% of the females questioned. So again, only 25% of live poker players are female.
- Age-wise, slots were more popular with the older audience (65% of those aged 21-35, but 75% of those aged 51-65 chose slots as their preferred game). Table games were more popular with the younger market: 21% of those aged 21-35 selected table games, with only 9% of those aged 66+ preferring them over slots.
- In total, 71% of those questioned selected slots/video poker, 14% chose table games, and 5% opted for "other." The remaining 5% were the "don’t knows."
