It's true and it's imminent, but it's localized and temporary.
The whole interstate isn't closing, only a section that traverses Cajon Pass and only for a period of several weeks, starting at the end of September and continuing throughout October. The main work will be done at the interchange of I-15 and I-215 near Devore, California.
The work begins on the night of Friday Sept. 29, with lane reductions on southbound I-15 at Devore. But the real headaches begin on Oct. 6, when southbound I-15 and northbound I-215 in that area will be completely closed; they won't reopen till Oct. 8. Over the next three weekends, further closures will greatly disrupt traffic in the same vicinity: southbound on I-15 again the following weekend (Oct. 13-15), then northbound Oct. 20-22 and 28-30.
Detours will be posted, but the California Department of Transportation strongly cautions drivers to seek alternate routes or face "hours of gridlock conditions." One alternative for getting from southern California to Las Vegas is to take I-10 east to CA 247 north, which connects to I-15 at Barstow.
The above schedule is tentative; it could change. You can call 866/383-4631 to sign up for email alerts on the project; you can also go to www.caltrans8.info for updates.
