Question of the Day - 29 October 2006

Q:
What overall information do you know about the South Coast to South Point switchover? For example, what will happen to our slot card points, once the name change goes into effect?
A:

It's too soon to tell exactly what changes are in store for the South Point, since it reverted to ownership by Michael Gaughan only this week. Here's what we know so far.

  • There will be a party celebrating the changeover today, from noon-midnight, with free cake and champagne for all.
  • There are currently no plans for any remodeling or for changes to rooms or eateries. (Even the hotel's logo has only changed three letters, and not in style.)
  • There are currently no plans to discontinue the free shuttle services that run between South Point and McCarran Airport and the Barbary Coast (see our "Free Shuttles" section under "Transportation" for more information about routes, schedules, and reservations.)
  • We heard a rumor that Michael Gaughan was teaming up with a third party to remodel the 4,400-seat Equestrian Center and turn it into a venue more suitable for concerts. However, although we've also heard of complaints from guests about the, shall we say, rustic smell emanating from the 1,200 climate-controlled horse stalls, the property was unable to confirm any such plans. There are currently no listed events scheduled for the arena after December this year -- we'll keep our ear to the ground on this one.
  • Finally, here's the lowdown on the players club. If you have an existing card for the old South Coast players club, you'll need to exchange it for a new South Point card the first time you play (old cards won't work). As far as transferring your points is concerned, we've had slightly mixed feedback.

An article in last Friday's Las Vegas Review-Journal had the following to say on the matter: "If you initially signed up for your Club Coast card at the South Coast, then all unredeemed points (earned on that card at any Coast casino) will be transferred to your new South point card ... If you initially signed up for your Club Coast card at any other Coast casino, all unredeemed points, including those earned at South Coast, will remain on the Club Coast card and can be redeemed at the Barbary Coast, Gold Coast, Orleans, or Suncoast."

However, we have since heard a different story, which was confirmed (twice -- we like to be thorough!) by the South Point players club and again by the Suncoast. This version goes like this: No points on your Club Coast card will be touched. If you have 1,000 points on there that you happened to earn at the South Coast, those points will remain on your card and can be redeemed at any of the Coast properties. The good news is that South Point will match any points earned at South Coast and automatically put those on your new South Point card (this applies only to South Coast points, not to points you may have earned at other Coast properties). We were slightly dubious as to whether they could actually distinguish at which property your Club Coast points had been earned, but we've been assured that they can and that the IT guys are hard at work implementing the new system as we write.

We're interested to hear from our readers about your experiences with the new players club and how all this point redemption works in practice. Please drop us a line, via the QoD submission page, with any feedback, good or bad.
