Question of the Day - 14 November 2006

Q:
What's the current status of the new car-rental facility at McCarran Airport? We'll be arriving in December and want to be prepared for any changes.
A:

We provided a full description of the $125 million under-construction car-rental center at McCarran International in the QoD on 9/1/06. It was originally scheduled to open last June, but was postponed till Nov. 1, in time to handle the crush of holiday crowds. Back then, we wrote, "Completion of the project by November seems doubtful, considering how far construction is behind schedule. It could take till early next year to open the facility."

And sure enough, when we spoke with a public-information officer at the airport, we were told that the car-rental facility is now due to open early next year. Furthermore, the deadline date seems to have firmed up a bit, as the officer let us know that the rental-car center's construction supervisor is resigning effective Jan. 31, 2007. This means that the facility will be up and running before that date.

Bottom line: You won't have to worry about a different system for renting a car in December, but get ready to take a shuttle bus to the new facility soon.
