At the current time, the answer to your question is no.
There are outdoor ranges in Las Vegas, but they're either private or are limited to sporting clays. Desert Sportsman's Rifle & Pistol Club, located at 12201 W. Charleston Blvd., for example, has outdoor pistol (25 to 70 yards) and rifle (220 to 600 yard) ranges, but it’s not open to the public. And the Las Vegas Gun Club, 9400 Tule Springs Rd. (in Floyd Lamb State Park), is open to the public, but it's a trap and skeet range. Ordinary plinkers have to go to hidden spots (that only they know of -- and they're not talking) out in the desert.
But we've been holding this question for a while (thanks for your patience), in order to see if a planned public shooting park might happen. And it looks like it might. Ground has just been broken on what could eventually be a $61 million, 225-acre, public outdoor shooting range. The Clark County Shooting Park, which is scheduled to open its first phase in January 2008, is shaping up to be one of the finest gun-education facilities anywhere.
The developers have plans for 60-point pistol and rifle ranges from 3 to 1,200 yards, with shaded firing points, a safety control tower, and night lighting. The pistol and rifle range will also have a 3,000-square-foot building, complete with a pro shop, convenience store, restrooms, and a 30-seat classroom.
There will also be an archery range comprising 16 different distances out to 90 yards, with covered firing areas, shade ramadas, night lighting, and a 1,500-square-foot classroom with restrooms; a shotgun center with a 5,000-square-foot building (cafeteria, pro shop, security room, and 50 gun lockers), plus 24 combo trap and skeet fields; and a hunter education center with a 4,000-square-foot education building and two simulated-hunting field courses. The Shooting Park will also host national and international events.
An RV park will feature 96 full-hookup sites (50-amp service) and all the usual amenities.
Las Vegas has needed a public shooting range for a long time (there are plenty of others around the state). If the Shooting Park ultimately brings to fruition the developers' plans, it will be one of the best in the nation, if not the world.
