It's been a while since we last visited the subject of silver strikes (Nov. 22, 2005, to be precise) and things have changed since then, and not in a positive way for players and collectors of the tokens. The trend toward their disappearance from Nevada casinos continues and the list of properties that still have silver strike machines has dwindled.
Here's what we gleaned, both from www.silverstrikers.com, which maintains an updated list of casinos, and our own call-around.
The Strip: Aladdin, Barbary Coast, Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Slots-A-Fun, TI.
Off Strip: Buffalo Bill's (Primm), Gold Coast, Hard Rock, Orleans, Palms, Sam's Town.
Downtown: California, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Nugget, Plaza.
Vanished from the list are Bally's, Boardwalk (demolished), Caesars Palace, Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, New Frontier, San Remo (now Hooters), South Coast (now South Point), Stardust (closed), Fitzgeralds, Vegas Club, and McCarran Airport.
The good news, however is that there's a tournament for silver strike enthusiasts, which will take place Jan. 5-8 at the Four Queens downtown. There are three packages available, ranging from a double-occupancy room for three nights for $561.60, single-occupancy room for $380.70, or a no-room package for $180.90. All options include the welcome reception (registration is from 4-6 pm on 5th), entrance to the awards ceremony with cake and champagne, and a limited edition quarter-pound silver and gold token. For more information, call reservations at the Four Queens on 702/385-4011 or 800/634-6045, or visit www.thestrikepoint.com.
