Question of the Day - 10 March 2007

Q:
I think I've got a question that even the LVA staff might have trouble finding an answer to: I was wondering, of the 35-40 million visitors to Las Vegas a year, what percent are first-timers? I'm guessing only 10-15%.
A:

You think you can stump us that easily? Nah! It took a mere few minutes to find the answer to this one, courtesy of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority's annual Visitor Profile survey. The results of monthly surveys are reported once a year, using statistics compiled from approximately 300 random in-person interviews with people in or near hotel-casinos and motels.

The most recent stats available relate to 2005, in which some 18% of visitors were found to be first-timers, as compared to 19% the previous year and 17% in '03. Of those questioned who turned out to be first-time visitors, 69% said that pleasure was the primary purpose of their trip. And since the report also reveals that 94% of all respondents were "very satisfied" with their current trip, we assume that pleasure was achieved.

It's unusual for these figures to change significantly year to year, but the next report is due out in the next few weeks, so if anything radical turns out to have happened since '05, we'll let you know.
