Question of the Day - 08 May 2007

Q:
How many pounds of shrimp does the Golden Gate go through per day?
A:

Ha! Good question.

The Golden Gate's bargain shrimp cocktail is part of the fabric of Las Vegas and has been in the LVA Top Ten since day one -- literally (see below, where we've reproduced the original LVA cover, featuring our first ever list of Top Ten values from back in February, 1983). According to LVA rules, when the price increased from 50¢ to 99¢, the GG's cocktail had to drop out for a while, but at 99¢ it's still a great deal (and getting better and better over time, as the quantity and quality remain constant in the face of inflation) so it's seldom been absent from our Top Ten picks.

We're not the only ones to recognise a good deal when we taste one and a call to the Gate revealed the following phenomenal shrimp-usage statistics:

  • Quantity of big shrimp eaten per day (in the $1.99 cocktail): 54lb
  • Bay shrimp eaten per day (the ones in the famous 99¢ cocktails): approx. 217lb
  • That's a lot of shrimp. We wonder whether the Golden Gate alone is responsible for shrimp having overtaken tuna as the number-one eaten seafood in the U.S.
