A popular question. In fact the most frequently asked FAQ we get: Since last July 4, we've received this query, in one shape or form or another, no less than 56 times. And the first one arrived October 4!
As far as casinos and fireworks go, forget it. The Stratosphere has been known to have a July 4 party, but not this year. And no one else is doing anything, either, as far as we've been able to surmise. In fact, Las Vegas seems to be doing less and less for this national holiday, with recent years having seen a huge free Red Hot Chili Peppers gig, concerts and fireworks out at Lake Las Vegas, and various open and VIP-only fireworks parties (how do you keep fireworks exclusive?) around town. The BIG party, however, has always been the Red, White and Boom event at Desert Breeze Park on the west side of town, which would be in its 13th year in 2007. Only it's been canceled.
Yep, it's shocking but true. Las Vegas' biggest Independence Day party has been scrapped because, as far as we could tell, the organizers couldn't be bothered this year. And because, at around $300,000 for all the equipment, talent, and pyrotechnics, it was deemed too expensive. "We know some people will be disappointed," commented a spokesperson. Yeah, about 20,000 or so, if last year's attendance is anything to go by. And that's just the people who actually forked out for the $20-$30 tickets, and doesn't include the cheapskates like us who simply enjoyed the show from our back yard.
Instead, the city will be celebrating "Red, White and Splash," featuring free admission to 13 Clark County water parks and pools. Whoop-di-doo.
So if you want to see fireworks, you're going to have to travel. The options include:
