Question of the Day - 27 July 2007

Q:
  • Which casinos have a wine bar?
  • Can you please provide a list of restaurants on the Strip that serve food after 11 pm, other than hotel coffee shops.
  • Are there any shuttles to and from the airport and hotels on the Strip?
  • I will be in Las Vegas Sept. 10-16 and would like to get into a low-cost Texas hold'em tournament. Could please let me know where I might do that?
  • Are there any vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Las Vegas?
  • When does the volcano at the Mirage work?
  • Do any hotels on the Strip offer free wireless Internet access with a room? Is there any place to get a free 'Net connection on the Strip in general, such as at a coffee shop?
A:

Today's answer was to be about romantic dining downtown, for which several of you have already contributed feedback. Fear not, this answer has simply been moved back and will now run on July 29; today we're taking the opportunity to explain a little change to how you view Question of the Day.

In the past, the e-mail you received each morning took you directly to the Question of the Day page on our Web site. However, from the nature of many of the questions that you submit to us, a selection of which we've reproduced above, we've come to the overwhelming conclusion that many of our loyal QoD visitors are tragically unaware of all the other great -- and free -- content to be found on our site. When people write in asking why their QoD hasn't been addressed, many times it's because we already cover the topic elsewhere.

Still, we don't want you to miss out. Which explains our new system of directing you to the LasVegasAdvisor.com home page each day, rather than directly to Question of the Day. We hope you'll be happy with the change and will benefit from a quick daily visit. And it's easy enough to click on the Question of the Day link (top, middle column), which takes you to the answer, as before.

Here's just a sample of some of the things you'll find on LasVegasAdvisor.com that you might not be aware of:

  • Today's News: A constantly-updated feature that allows you to stay up-to-date with all things gambling/Las Vegas, from breaking international news stories to the latest deals and offers around town. Join up for the RSS feed and never miss a story.
  • Special offers, promotions, and the newest releases from ShopLVA.com, our online store, where you can purchase the best in gambling books, guidebooks, tutorial software, and gifts for Vegas/gambling fans.
  • Our Vegas Info section, which is updated on a continual basis, covering every aspect of your trip. Looking for the phone number or Web site link to a hotel or casino? We have them all. Or a list of every single buffet in town with times and prices? We update it every month. Ditto production shows and upcoming special events. Want to know where to find sushi or where to eat late-night? Our huge restaurant directory (which covers the whole city, not just the hotels) is constantly expanding and includes our own reviews and those of our members; it's also searchable by cuisine type (including vegetarian-friendly) or property.

Check out the "Activities" section for information on every free attraction, exhibit, tour, gallery, thrill ride, movie theater, bowling alley, shopping mall -- we could go on, but you get the picture. "Nightlife" includes everything from ultralounges to karaoke, brewpubs to strip clubs. Not to mention wine bars. We cover free wi-fi hotspots, hotel Internet charges, city maps, pool parties, every form of transportation (including a great feature called Taxi Tips and printable maps of all the free shuttle routes, with schedules), spas, golf courses, a list of all the Vegas radio stations and what they play (print it out and bring it with you), and a weekly TV guide that lists every Vegas/gambling-related show and movie for the upcoming week.

  • Then there's the Gambling Info section, where you can use our "Tournament Search" function to find every daily/weekly poker tourney in town, with buy-ins and information on the percentages returned. It also has the most comprehensive nationwide blackjack-tournament listings anywhere. Or find out where to locate your favorite video poker game, or the latest slot club bonus offers, or information on non-smoking casino areas (some are reverting back to smoking), or free gaming classes, or where to play single-zero roulette, or bingo, or keno, or ... OK, enough!
  • And what about the forums? Some are members-only, but many of our chat forums are open to all and you can read and contribute to trip reports and join a huge commu
