Question of the Day - 30 July 2007

Q:
In a break from the norm, today we're not running a question, but rather a contest. Read on ...
A:

Exciting plans are afoot for a brand new look for the LVA Web site, with lots of new content and other features that for now must remain top secret, but that we know you're going to absolutely love ... Ooh, we're such teases.

Anyhow, as the design process progresses, we've encountered the need for a stunning picture of the Las Vegas Strip to occupy a prominent place on the new home page. So, we thought it would be fun to appeal to our talented readers and see if you can help us out. The image needs to say "Vegas" loud and clear and would ideally be a nighttime or dusk shot -- i.e., we want to see those twinkling lights. The space it will occupy is approximately 600 pixels wide x 200 pixels high; we can, of course, crop images to fit this space, but a lovely, tall, narrow picture of the Stratosphere Tower, for example, isn't going to cut it. And it needs to be something that works all year round, so the the "Big Bang" New Year's firework poster that we sell (see below) wouldn't work in this instance, either, but we thought we'd include it today just to inspire you.

We're still a ways off from launching the new site, so if you'd like to submit something but don't think you have anything appropriate to hand, remember to bring your camera on your next visit. We'll let you know when the closing date draws near -- for now, assume you have at least a month to get your best picture to us.

There's no hard cash up for grabs, but the winner who sends in the photograph we choose will have the fun and kudos of seeing their handiwork displayed for thousands to see every day and we will, of course, credit the photographer. And who knows, we may well send you a little something extra in the mail for your trouble. We're goofy that way.

Send in your best pic(s) to [email protected], the special dedicated email address we've set up strictly for this project. In the interests of not crashing our email system, we're going to limit it to a maximum of three images per person and as long as you have a hi-rez version available, you don't need to send us enormous files (in fact, we'd prefer that you don't), so keep 'em manageable, if possible. But if you have a great photo that you don't know how to re-size at your end, go ahead and send us what you have and we'll sort it out here.

Happy snapping!
