Question of the Day - 10 August 2007

Q:
As I was looking at your Web site under buffets I noticed you gave a ranking of 9.8 to the Circus Circus brunch. What could possibly justify a rank that high at a dive like that?
A:

Apparently, you didn't click on the link. If you had, you would've immediately seen that the Circus Circus Champagne Brunch is served in the fine Steak House, not the (dive) buffet.

The Circus Circus Steak House has been one of the best meat-and-potatoes restaurants in Las Vegas for 20 years or so. It's an island of old-school charm and calm in the midst of the madness of the clown's joint. It's an intimate room reminiscent of 1890s’ San Francisco, with deep-red-leather booths, dark wood paneling, antique brass furnishings, and dim lighting; a ton of beef -- dry aged for three weeks -- is displayed in a glassed-in area at one side and the cooking takes place over a central open-hearth mesquite grill.

Walking into the Steak House is like entering the Twilight Zone; sometimes we think the entire Circus casino, midway, buffet, etc. are just there to provide contrast for the gourmet dining room.

But we digress. Seating times for the Sunday brunch are 9:30 and 11:30 am and 1:30 pm (reservations required). The price is $32.95 for adults and $19.95 for children 6 to 14; children under 6 are free. The sparkling wine served is Domaine Ste. Michelle (from Washington State), which is both excellent and unlimited.

You order an entrée from the grill (filet, New York strip, veal chop, chicken, to name a few), as well as load up from a full buffet of breakfast items (made-to-order eggs and omelets, bacon and sausage, potatoes, fresh pancakes & waffles), lunch items (jumbo shrimp, crab claws, clams, oysters, sushi, salads, prime rib station, pasta, rice, lobster mashed potatoes), and dessert items.

The quality of the food and service are comparable to the Sterling Brunch at Bally's; the variety is less, but the Champagne Brunch is half the price of the Sterling. As such, we'd call it the second-best Sunday brunch in Las Vegas and the first in value (though a similar brunch, served in the Broiler at Boulder Station, at $20 gives it a run for the money).

And, just to clarify, the rating awarded to this meal is not ours, but rather reflects the average score given to it by our members, one of whose perks includes being able to review and rate the eateries and other venues listed on our site. So if you don't want to take our word for it, take the word of the readers who thought it merited a 9.8.

Update 10 August 2007
A follow-up to today's answser: "This is not a question just a comment. I'm the party that gave the brunch at Circus Circus the rating of 9.8. I would just like to thank you for confirming my rating. The only thing is people will find out how good it is and I'll have to make reservations far ahead of my trips to town." (Gary in Wisconsin)
