Question of the Day - 14 August 2007

Q:
I was recently in Las Vegas for the first time and was disappointed to not find an NPR station. How is that Reno has one, but not Vegas?
A:

You didn't look hard enough. In fact, there isn't just one NPR station in Las Vegas, there are two. In Las Vegas, "NPR" also signifies Nevada Public Radio.

As you scan from the low end of the FM-dial numbers, the first National Public Radio station you come to is News 88.9 KNPR; www.knpr.org. It features the news and talk programming you probably know and like: "Morning Edition" 5-8 am weekdays and "Weekend Edition" 5-9:30 am (followed on Saturday by a half-hour of "Car Talk"); an hour of KNPR'S "State of Nevada"; followed by "Talk of the Nation," "Day to Day," "The World," "Fresh Air," "All Things Considered," and "Marketplace"; then the BBC's "World Service" overnight programming from midnight to 5 am.

Next up on the dial, at 89.7 FM, is KCNV, with 24 hours of classical music; go to www.classical897.org/grid.cfm for the complete schedule.

For a complete list of Las Vegas radio stations, including information on what type of music they play (or what talk they talk, as applicable), look no further than the "Vegas Info" section on our home page, where you'll find a link to a handy guide that you can print out and bring with you.

Update 14 August 2007
Thanks for the following update we received for this answer:
  • "Nevada Public Radio is NOT the only NPR station/s in town. KUNV is an affiliate of NPR. Along with our locally produced jazz programming and eclectic weekend schedule, we carry the NPR newscast each hour, and NPR programs like "Jazzset" and "Piano Jazz." (I also believe KCEP is an NPR affiliate, but I'm not sure what programs they might carry.)"
