Boy, this question’s a real blast from the past. We can hardly believe GSN is still airing that episode, which took place so long ago that we can’t even find it in our LVA archives (either that or we never archived it in the first place).
Anyway, Anthony wracked his brain to come up with the following.
"John O’Hurley was the host. He’s kind of a gambling guy; he had a deal with Steve Cyr, protagonist of our book Whale Hunt in the Desert, to bring Cyr’s life story to the small screen (which never panned out). But he loved talking about gambling and we spent some time after the show jawboning about it.
"I had to coach the imposters before the show and it was almost surreal the way they all sounded like me as they were answering questions from the four panelists. One of the imposters was asked if he played roulette and he said, ‘I never play roulette, because you can’t win in the long run.’ He probably stopped just short of saying that it’s a negative expectation game.
"I remember two of the four panelists were Paula Poundstone and Patrick Duffy. Patrick Duffy asked really good questions. Paula Poundstone had to recuse herself, because she thought she knew that I was the real Anthony Curtis. It turns out that she actually thought I was John Patrick [John Patrick is a gambling author and personality] who she saw on television at some point.
"So, out of guesses by the remaining three panelists, only one guessed an imposter. The other two knew it was me.
"It was pretty fun and worth doing, and I recommended Jean Scott to the producers as a likely subject. Jean’s show aired in early November 2000, so my show was probably a year or so previous to that. I just don’t remember exactly when."
