Question of the Day - 29 November 2007

Q:
We're considering coming to Las Vegas for Christmas this year. Does the city decorate and celebrate the holidays? Is there anything special that goes on during that time? Do you know of anything going on this coming holiday season?
A:

We can't believe it's that time of the year again already but we're happy to oblige with our annual Question of the Day Christmas Activity Round-Up (QODCAR, for short).

First, some notable absences: Caesars Palace, long famed for its outdoor Christmas tree, will apparently be treeless this year due to construction issues; there will be no repeat of the Rio's "Holiday Show in the Sky" this holiday season -- the Masquerade Tower float show will in fact be dark from Dec. 16-26; and at the time of this writing, the Hard Rock did not yet know if they'd be repeating last year's "Hard Rockafella" celebrations with the outdoor skating rink -- again, blame the current expansion projects if that one fails to materialize.

So there's the bad news. The good news is that most of the old favorites will be taking place, together with some more recently established traditions, plus some novel events for 2007 that are sure to keep the whole family full of festive cheer, especially if you're into gingerbread houses, which seem to be the only sector of the Las Vegas housing market unaffected by the subprime catastrophe (see tomorrow's QoD) and are in fact the one area of the real estate market that seems to be booming this year.

Update 29 November 2007
An addition to the festive party line-up: On Friday, Dec. 7, MGM Grand's Studio 54 nightclub will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a sexy winter ball, for which the venue will transform into a winter wonderland featuring seductive snow bunnies, cascading snow, chilled cocktails, ice-caged go-go dancers, and the sultry ladies of MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris emerging throughout the night from an ice castle. Must be 21+ to attend. For more information visit www.mgmgrandnightlife.com Another reader suggestion: "Another thing to do at Christmas time is the Santa Train that Nevada Southern Railway runs for the first two weekends in December. Tickets are only $2 for children and adults and the people there work really hard to give everyone a good time! Their website is nevadasouthern.com." [Ed: Good call. The Santa Train runs every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. those two weekends.] Thanks to the reader who wrote in with the following: "I see from the Chabadlv.org website that there are also two celebrations going on for Chanukah -- one at the Fremont Street Experience at 4th Street on Tuesday December 4th at 5 p.m. (a Chanukah Menorah Lighting Ceremony -- this is actually an annual event that has been going on for many years) and there also will be a 'Chanukah In The District' celebration on Sunday, December 9th at 4 p.m. at the District at Green Valley Ranch."
