Question of the Day - 27 March 2008

Q:
I've traveled to Las Vegas on many occasions and one thing that's always been a challenge is finding reasonably priced alcohol. Although there are plenty of great deals at the bars, if I want to have a little party in my room, I can't find a liquor store without a huge markup anywhere. Perhaps I'm staying too close to the Strip and paying "tourist prices." In the past, I've resigned myself to just biting the bullet because I'm on vacation. However, I'm having my wedding at the MGM Grand in May and we'll be buying lots of beer, wine, and liquor to host a sizable party in our suite. The wedding's already costing us plenty and I'd rather not pay through the nose for everything. Is there anyplace you recommend to find cheap booze in Sin City? Please help us spread good cheer!
A:

Our pleasure! It's the kind of thing we like to know about for ourselves, too, so you inspired us to send one of our intrepid researchers out into the field for some serious scouting. The methodology was simple enough: We chose a few popular brands and compared like with like, wherever possible. Below are Lori's findings, with cheapest prices listed in bold.

We've long known about Lee's Discount Liquor and how it generally lives up to its name. Not only are their prices highly competitive, but they stock an extensive range and are a good bet if you're looking for an obscure liqueur or a rarefied import beer. They have several locations in Las Vegas, including one at 9110 S. Las Vegas Blvd. The other two locations closest to the Strip would be 3480 E. Flamingo Rd. and 1780 S. Rainbow Blvd.

The liquor store at the Orleans is a proper store, not just your typical casino gift shop, and as far as casinos go, this is almost certainly your cheapest bet, especially if you have a players card -- Club Coast members receive a discount on all merchandise, plus you can choose to redeem your points there for "free" booze. (Note: The prices quoted above are without any discount.) Their bottled beer is in six-packs only and the selection of beer in cans in anything bigger than a six-pack is pretty limited. It was interesting to note that Bud and Corona were the same price -- that's the cheapest we saw Corona anywhere.

If you're prepared to venture a little farther afield -- the corner of N. Decatur and Lake Mead, to be precise -- we can recommend H&H Discount Liquors. Not only is the owner a hoot, but he informed Lori that she was wasting her time researching this, because he'll beat anybody’s prices, which he pretty much did on the hard liquor. Also, no one else came close to his price on Moët and the beer prices were within a dollar. He also said he’d haggle by as much as $1 per bottle if purchased by the case, so it's definitely worth trying to negotiate on a bulk buy. He was the first port-of-call on this mission, and said if we came back with the competitors’ prices, he’d beat them. It's the only place we came across that offered a quantity discount.

Update 27 March 2008
"To follow up on the discount liquor QoD, in addition to South Point and the Orleans, the Gold Coast also has extremely low prices on a good selection of liquor. Not Lee's level of choice but much more than one finds at retail outlets in the average hotel/casino. I imagine Suncoast may have a similar set-up, although I have not investigated. I believe Michael Gaughan's opinion is that having the best liquor prices in town is a good way to get locals into the casinos. While South Point remains true to this practice, it's refreshing to know that Boyd has evidently not abandoned the concept at the Coast properties." Some more feedback: "You should check out the gift shop at South Point. Last week a 750 ml bottle of Jack Daniel's was $16.99, for example. It's a really well stocked store with the cheapest prices we have seen in town." Likewise: "Regarding good booze prices in Vegas, my wife and I prefer "Early Times," a Kentucky bourbon. It runs here in Florida from $15.99 to $21.99 for the 750 ml bottle and the $15.99 is rare to find. We found it for $10.99 at South Point, and they had a very fine selection. That price is far and away the cheapest we have ever seen." Thanks to the reader who wrote in with this useful cautionary word of advice: "I read your answer about where to buy liquor cheap. One thing you should mention is that the hotel may charge a corkage fee. Some hotels won't allow customers to bring in booze from outside. They must purchase their booze at the inflated prices. After all, it is their liquor license and they are the ones most likely cleaning up after the party. I worked at a hotel that confiscaded booze and beer coming in New Year's Eve if the guests didn't pay the corkage fee."
