Question of the Day - 27 April 2008

Q:
What’s the latest great sushi play in Las Vegas?
A:

For a city that didn't embrace the "sushi thing" till about a decade ago, there are a whole lot of options around town today, both in and out of the casinos. Las Vegas currently supports dozens of sushi houses and at any given time, five to 10 of them have all-you-can eat deals.

The town's current best all-you-can-eat option is available every night for $19.50 at the original Hamada on Flamingo Ave. (just east of Paradise Rd.). The deal's offered 11 pm to 3 am (late-night only), plus you can order chicken teriyaki, short ribs, and tempura. The fish is good here and the vibe is terrific, as Hamada is one of Las Vegas' longest-running and best-known sushi names.

Other good sushi plays include the following:

  • Sushi/Sake and China Spice at Green Valley Ranch has an all-you-can-eat special for $32.99, Tues.-Thurs. from 5 to 7 pm.

  • Koji at the Orleans has a sushi lunch special for $10, served from 11:30 am to 3 pm on weekdays. It’s about eight pieces of California roll, plus one each of tuna, salmon, and shrimp (fish may vary), plus salad and miso soup.
  • Sushi Fever
  • , at 7985 W. Sahara, is our favorite local sushi haunt. A full dinner for two with sake and beer comes in around $70 and the place is always jumping.

  • On the high end in the casinos, Hachi at Red Rock is our favorite, followed by Nobu at Hard Rock, Okada at Wynn Las Vegas, and Social House at Treasure Island. These will run you more like $150 for two, but they’re top of the line for quality and atmosphere.
  • And the only all-night sushi place in town is Lahaina Grill, a bar-style eatery at 4570 S. Hualapai Way on the far west side of town that serves 24/7.
  • We stay on the lookout and report good new discoveries as we find them in the Las Vegas Advisor. For example, we have a line on another top happy-hour deal at a place on the west side called Sapporo.
