Q:
What's the average gambling budget of a typical visitor to Las Vegas?
A:
The last time we got a question along these lines was a couple of years ago. According to the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority's latest stats, the average amount budgeted for gambling per visitor in 2004 (the most up-to-date figures available at that time) was $545. According to the same survey, the average length of stay was 4.6 days/3.6 nights, working out to an average gambling budget of around $118.50 per day.
It just so happens that the equivalent 2007 study just saw the dark of print and landed on our desk, which reveals the following updated statistics:
- 84% of visitors said they gambled while in Vegas (down from 87% in 2004).
- Among those who said they did, the average number of hours per day spent gambling was 3.4 (a slight increase in the 2004 figure of 3.3 hours).
- The average stated gambling budget per trip in 2007 was $555.64, up from $490.87 in 2003 (as far back as we have figures at our fingertips), but that doesn't factor in inflation. Using the U.S. Department of Labor's Inflation Calculator, we figured out that the 2003 equivalent at today's prices would have been approximately $540, meaning that figure's only up a little under $15 or so, in real money, from four years ago.
