Question of the Day - 19 May 2008

Q:
I was driving into Reno from the east last week when I saw a huge building being constructed on the outskirts of the city. It's near the Sparks Blvd. exit off I-80 and I would estimate it to be about 10 stories tall. I didn't stop in Reno, so I couldn't ask anybody. Do you know what it is?
A:

Yes we do. What you saw was Scheels, a 300,000-square-foot sporting-goods store scheduled to open in late September. You're right: It's a huge building. In fact, it's the largest retail outlet in Nevada outside of the Las Vegas metro area. By comparison, it's twice the size of Cabela's, another sporting-goods superstore that opened at Boomtown in west Reno earlier this year.

Scheels is the anchor store for the Legends at Sparks Marina, which we covered in the 2/24/08 QoD. It's far more, however, than just a retail store. It will have 65-foot-tall Ferris wheel with 16 seats; four local sports hall of fames; a 20-yard archery range; laser-shooting gallery; and golf-course and NASCAR (similar to the one at the Sahara) simulators. Also featured will be two 16,000-gallon aquariums (one freshwater, the other salt); a 35-foot-tall mountain with 300 taxidermied animals; and Grandma Ginna's restaurant, serving buffalo and other wild game.

Scheels opened its first store in Sabin, Minn., in 1902 and now has 22 stores located in eight states: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
