Question of the Day - 28 June 2008

Q:
What’s the origin of the Huntington Press name? Is there an actual person or partner named Huntington? We thought Huntington Press and LVA were solely owned by Anthony Curtis.
A:

Huntington Press is the parent company of Las Vegas Advisor and is named for Huntington Beach, California, where Anthony Curtis says the idea for the Las Vegas Advisor was hatched. Anthony explains how it came about.

When I turned 21 in 1979, I was living near the ocean in Huntington Beach. I’d come to California to wrestle at UCLA and had been coaching at one of the local high schools during the previous year. My plan was to coach until I was old enough to gamble, then relocate to Las Vegas.

I used to spend most of my days out on the beach, often reading books on blackjack. In fact, I read everything I could get my hands on about gambling and Las Vegas. The first part was easy, as many gambling books were available, even a well-known gambling newsletter called Rouge et Noir. But it was nearly impossible to find anything about the city itself.

One day while I was sitting by the pool discussing my plans with my girlfriend, I decided to test an idea on her. I told her I might start my own newsletter about Las Vegas after I’d spent some time there. I’ll never forget the look on her face. At first I thought she thought it was crazy. I said, "You don’t like that idea?" Her eyes got big and she answered, "On the contrary. I think it’s brilliant!" That reaction made a real impression on me and I kept the idea alive.

I moved to Las Vegas later that year (without the girl) and began playing with the idea of the newsletter firmly implanted in the back of my mind. When I finally saw that it could be done and that other publishing opportunities were available, I decided to investigate.

The first step was the business set-up, which meant I had to have a name. I had no idea, but the thoughts that came most quickly to mind were the planning on the beach and my girlfriend’s encouragement. It all happened in Huntington Beach; hence, I named the company Huntington Press.
