Question of the Day - 16 September 2008

Q:
Hi, my wife and I travel to Las Vegas once a month for gaming and general fun. We now have a small puppy that is only 15 pounds and are wondering if there are any Las Vegas casinos that are pet-friendly. I looked on your site and it says to check out our pet-friendly section, but I am unable to find it. Can you tell me what if any casinos allow small pets? Thank you.
A:

No problem.

The only hotel-casino properties we're aware of that admit pets are Green Valley Ranch, Red Rock, Lucky Club (formerly the Speedway), and the Westin Casuarina. The Four Seasons also admits pets, as does the Super 8 Motel that's affiliated with Ellis Island. A number of other non-gaming properties also admit pets -- you'll find our Pet-Friendly section in the Hotel Guide in "Hotels & Rooms" and also duplicated in the "LVA Visitor Guide."

Many of the properties that admit pets charge a fee (sometimes a refundable deposit, sometimes a non-refundable one, often a nightly charge, and frequently a combination of these). It's common for a one- or two-pet-per-room policy to apply and certain weight restrictions are often imposed too. Twenty to twenty-five pounds is the common maximum, however, so your 15-pound puppy should be fine. You'll see in our listings, which we just updated, that a number of properties will accept pets that weigh 40 pounds or more, but several will not permit certain breeds of dogs, including pit bulls, Rottweillers, and Dobermans.

Update 16 September 2008
If you don't mind -- or are planning on -- staying a little further afield, there are a couple of other pet-friendly options: Whiskey Pete's out in Primm charges $15 per night. Pets must be well behaved and weigh no more than 50 lbs. Shot records are required at the time of check-in and pitbulls are not allowed. Loews Lake Las Vegas is also pet-friendly (the entire chain prides itself on how "Loews Loves Pets" and has "the most pet-friendly hotels around.") They charge a flat refundable deposit of $25 (unless you cancel 72 hours or more in advance) and impose a limit of two pets per room. At check-in, all pets receive their own gifts, including a pet tag, bowl, and a special treat to start their vacation. Owners receive a detailed brochure with information on hotel pet services -- such as the Loews Loves Pets room service menu, local dog walking routes, and area pet services, including veterinarians, pet shops, groomers, and more. Additional items available for guests with pets include dog and cat beds (different sizes), leashes and collars (different sizes), rawhide bones, catnip, scratch poles, litter boxes and litter, and pooper scoopers. It's a dog's life!
