Question of the Day - 12 October 2008

Q:
I understand that all of Harrah's Casinos in Vegas are pulling IGT Megabucks Progressive machines. What casinos in Vegas still have those progressive slots? How often do they actually hit?
A:

We hadn’t heard about this until you mentioned it, so we put in calls to the various Harrah’s slot departments and it turns out you’re right: Bally’s and Paris got rid of all their Megabucks machines some months back. The Imperial Palace took out their last four machines about a year ago. The Rio has just one dollar progressive machine next to the main cage and Harrah’s has one by the poker room. The Flamingo’s also down to its last remaining Megabucks machine, which you’ll find near the showroom. And Caesars Palace has two left, located next to the cigar store (see QoD 10/10/08 for more on that).

You can monitor this ongoing situation and make sure the machines are still in place by logging on to the Harrah’s Slot Finder, which enables you to find your favorite slots in any Harrah’s property nationwide, or find out which slots any particular Harrah’s property has, including their denominations. Plus, you can keep abreast of all the current Megajackpot levels in Nevada right here on our Web site.

No one we spoke to could give us a reason why the company is evidently phasing out Megabucks; neither could International Game Technology, which owns the game. IGT did, however, confirm that its Web site contains up-to-date information about which casinos in Las Vegas (and across the country) do still have Megabucks machines. Just click here for the list of all 58 venues in Las Vegas where you can currently play the $1 game, plus Penny Megabucks and all the other Megajackpot games throughout Nevada.

To answer your third question, Megabucks in Nevada has produced 71 major winners, 52 of them in Las Vegas casinos, since it was launched in the spring of 1986. Those 71 winners have won a total of $606,978,326.53.

Update 12 October 2008
This feedback from a reader today, which we'll investigate: "About your QOD for 10/12/08. All Harrah's properties are in the process of eliminating "Participation" slot machines, where Harrah's leases the machine from the manufacturer and has to share the profits with them." [Ed: If that's the case, then a lot of your other favorite games may be disappearing from Harrah's casino floors.]
