Question of the Day - 14 July 2009

Q:
Question One: Do you know if anyone has ever used every coupon in the POV during the course of a year? I think it would be an interesting challenge. Question Two: Just got back from a week in Vegas and I used a lot of the coupons from the coupon book. I was surprised that most of the buffet people knew how to use the coupon right away, but some of the non-buffet dining coupons seemed to be first- time experiences for most of the sales clerks. I had to translate the Nathan's coupon into Spanish and the person still did not grasp the concept of "50% off one." My question is, do you keep track of how many times the various coupons are redeemed?
A:

To answer question #1, as far as we know, no one, not even us, has ever used every offer in the premium coupon package that comes with a subscription to the Las Vegas Advisor.

After all, the 2009 package contains 152 coupons. So a local would have to redeem one practically every other day to use them all. But a local wouldn't, conceivably, need the eight accommodations deals or two rental-car discounts. And visitors, certainly, would have to be single-mindedly dedicated to take advantage of the 43 dining and drinking coupons, especially at some pretty far-flung casinos, such as the Opera House in the north (though that's a good 50% off deal in the coffee shop) and Sunset Station in the southeast (also 50% off a meal at the Guadalajara or Capri eateries). The 24 buffet deals alone would require a concerted effort by two locals, with visitors partaking of nothing but buffets, which would preclude all the other dining coupons.

And that doesn't include the 22 coupons for shows and clubs, as well as the 11 coupons for attractions, including a 2-for-1 admission to a 51s baseball game at Cashman Field and 2-for-1 golf at the par-three Angel Park course.

Several years ago, we had a free weekly e-mail called LVA Lite, which had a feature called "Coupon of the Week." Even ganging up several coupons on an occasional week -- for example, on gambling-coupon runs in one general vicinity -- we were still hard-pressed to use up even half a coupon book throughout a full year.

But who knows? Maybe some fanatic out there has done it, or at least made a stab at it, and if so, how about letting us know? Anyone with some quantitative LVA coupon-book statistics, please weigh in and, as always, we'll run it in the Update space below.

The answer to question #2 is, likewise, no. Some, if not most or all, casinos track coupon use, certainly, but we don't have a facility for retrieving those numbers from individual properties. Every year we get a feel for how our coupons are doing when we go to renew them for the new book and you can assume that the coupons that have been part of the POV/MRB package for many years are well-used and, thus, appreciated by the sponsoring casinos. But as for specific numbers, nope, we don't get them. It would be interesting, though.

Update 14 July 2009
Some reader comments: "A couple of years ago, I did all the entries in the Top 10 Values list of that month in one 4-day visit, and THAT took a week of planning. I can't imagine anyone will come close to doing every coupon." [Ed: Bravo!] "I tried sending this yesterday, but my Internet access was choppy... My wife and I have lots of fun doing a 'coupon run.' We'll take an entire day (or 2) and use as many LVA coupons as we can. We've tried new restaurants, seen new things, and gotten familiar with the city. In 2007, with gambling coupons we were a glittering 19-2 for a profit of $141 (after car and gas). Hey, this is easy, right? NOT. 2008: 4-18, for a loss of $196. Sigh. One casino would only pay even money for a blackjack, and for $5, I didn't argue. Looking forward to doing it again this year!"
