Question of the Day - 19 July 2009

Q:
Are there any behind-the-scenes tours of Cirque du Soleil?
A:

You're in luck -- yes, there are! It's a new option that Cirque introduced earlier this summer at both (MGM Grand) and Mystère (TI) and the best news is, these tours are free! The not-so-good news is that they occur rarely, have yet to be regularly scheduled, and often happen with minimal notice. So far we've heard of one at KÀ and two at Mystère since May, but Cirque tells us they should be becoming more freqent and we're expecting an update very soon, which we'll post in Today's News.

We only found out about these new tours by signing up to follow the CirqueLasVegas Twitter feed, where they generally announce an upcoming "Mystère Revealed" or "KÀ Revealed" opportunity a few days before it takes place. To date, the way it's worked is that they'll offer a backstage opportunity to the first 100 people who show up to see the show -- you need to be there before the doors open (they'll Tweet the time) and if you're in that first 100, you'll get to go backstage to watch the artists train and ask questions.

When/if a regular schedule is ever formulated, we'll be sure to pass on the details. Right now, unless you live here you'll just have to hope you get lucky and that one of the tours is taking place during your visit, or that you can schedule a trip to coincide with a tour. In the meantime, we recommend you sign up for one or more of Cirque's social networking/marketing options -- Twitter, Facebook, their desktop widget, texts to your mobile phone etc. They are very interactive and we've found Twitter to be a great source of news. Each Cirque show also has it's own website (here's the link to the umbrella CirqueLasVegas website -- click on any show and you'll see the link to its own site), where you'll find heaps of behind-the-scenes information and video clips, interviews with cast and crew etc.

The only other show that we know of to offer behind-the-scenes access is Jubilee!, which has been running backstage walking tours at 11 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday for years now. Your tour guide is a showgirl from the production and it's $15 ($10 if you have a ticket to see the show).
