Question of the Day - 11 December 2009

Q:
Flying into Vegas for the New Year's weekend. We will not get into town until 9 p.m .on New Year's Eve. Would we be better off to get a cab or rent a car at that time of night on "that night"? Want to get to the Strip ASAP.
A:

The Strip closes to all vehicle traffic early in the evening on December 31 every year; it'll definitely be blocked by the time you get off the plane.

Meanwhile, the crowds are so huge on the Strip, and parking is so tight within a quarter-mile of it, that we strongly suggest you grab a taxi and give the cabbie a big tip to deliver you as close as you can get. You can worry about picking up a rental car on New Year's day (reserve early, though, as 250,000 other people will be in town, competing for the reduced fleet, which is why prices are up).

We also suggest you attend to your bodily functions at the airport. By the time you land, get a cab, and fight the traffic to the Strip, all the casino doors will be closed to non-guests and you'll need a room key to get in. Even if you have reservations and are trying to check in, chances are (unless you encounter an extremely cooperative security guard at the door) you won't be admitted till long after midnight. Which means you won't be able to hit a restroom till then either.

And dress warm. Think Times Square. It's cold late at night in the desert in December, usually in the 30s.

Update 11 December 2009
Reader comments: "Love your site, but boy did you miss the boat on this one. I have been there twice on New Year's Eve, including the Millenium Party. I agree, he WON'T be able to get into his Hotel till well past midnight, and I know the strip is closed to traffic, that is precisely why he SHOULD rent a car right away! Tell me, exactly what is he supposed to do with his, and his traveling companions luggage? In my opinion, the better play would be : 1) Rent a car immediately, 2) Put anything you don't want to carry with you for the next 6 hours in the trunk. 3) Drive to and park at something like the Las Vegas Hilton, the Hard Rock hotel, some strip mall or wherever you can safely and legally park, and then 4) WALK to the party on Las Vegas Blvd."
