Question of the Day - 23 December 2009

Q:
With the announcement of Binion’s shutting down the hotel part of its downtown operations due to lack of business, are there any other places kicking around the idea of doing the same thing?
A:

Late last year, Buffalo Bill's in Primm released a shocker, saying it was closing its hotel rooms midweek. Now, it's one of the relatively few hotels that’s sold out of New Year’s, while Binion’s hotel tower will be dark.

Hard on the heels of the Binion’s announcement came this bulletin: "The Plaza Hotel & Casino downtown has closed the Omelet House, Aqua Pit and Aqua Lounge. Please update your listings if you have these venues included. Nothing is going to replace them at this time. Thanks."

Down on the Strip, casinos are starting to feel the holiday doldrums. The Riviera just axed two more shows –- its Neil Diamond tribute act and Ice. Just to its north, the Sahara has shut down its buffet for the holiday season and is taking two of its hotel towers out of service. The hotel is seeking $272/room for New Year’s Eve (normally, a Thursday-night room at the Sahara can be had for $30), but is apparently having trouble drumming up business. Even the Mirage has mothballed a number of its hotel floors during the current doldrums.
