Question of the Day - 26 December 2009

Q:
I read a little mention in our local newspaper about a big gun park that just opened in Las Vegas. Is this some sort of tourist attraction? Or is there really a 3,000-acre shooting range in the city?
A:

We first wrote about the Clark County Shooting Park in the 11/15/06 QoD, when ground was broken on this $61 million 2,900-acre public shooting range. At that time, we wrote that it was scheduled to open its first phase in January 2008.

But neighboring homeowners opposed to the park sued the county, claiming it would be a disruption and drive down property values. A federal judge, however, dismissed the lawsuit last May and the park proceeded toward its soft opening on Saturday December 18. The official grand opening will take place in January.

The entire park complex is located about five miles north of the Las Vegas Beltway, at the north end of Decatur Boulevard, between Decatur and Buffalo just north of Moccasin Road at the base of Sheep Mountain. It occupies nearly five square miles, most of which provide a buffer around the shooting areas that occupy less than 200 acres, with the build-out accounting for 900 acres; the rest of the land is managed as a natural desert and wildlife area.

The park features 60-point pistol and rifle ranges from 3 to 1,200 yards, with shaded firing points, a safety control tower, and night lighting. The ranges also have a 3,000-square-foot building, complete with a pro shop, convenience store, restrooms, and a 30-seat classroom.

There’s also an archery range comprising 16 different distances out to 90 yards, with covered firing areas, shade ramadas, night lighting, and a 1,500-square-foot archery center. Trap and skeet fields, a shotgun range, a hunter-education center with two simulated-hunting field courses, and an RV park and campground with 80 spaces fill out the features. The Shooting Park plans to host national and international events.

The hours are weekends till January 6th, then 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
