Question of the Day - 28 January 2010

Q:
While "surfing" around for designs for a firepit for my backyard, I came across this picture. It looks like an awesome building! The caption states that the picture was taken from the roof of the Southwest Gas Building, and you can easily pick out Bellagio, Venetian, and presumably Mirage in the background. Poking around on Google Earth, I can't seem to find a building that would fit this location. Is this a real picture, or has it been "enhanced," and where can I find the actual location?
A:

It is a cool-looking space and we had no idea what or where it was, either. So, we shot off an email to Southwest Gas and, by return, received a very polite reply that explained that the photograph you refer to was of the "Southwest Gas Outdoor Room that was located at our Tropicana/Arville office. This location is now closed."

As soon as we got the email, we realized there was a huge clue in the photo -- the firepit in the foreground is in the shape of the Southwest Gas logo (see below), and this was evidently an outdoor "showroom" that showcased the various types of "outdoor room" amenities you can choose from. We confess we'd never heard of the concept of an "outdoor room" before, although now that we know what one is, we can think of several examples in Las Vegas, like the T-Bones Chophouse patio at Red Rock and the new H2O venue at the Golden Nugget, to name just a couple. Here's the definition from Southwest Gas's website:

"An outdoor room is an extension of your home's living space that is designed for different climates and seasons. It can include grilling, eating and sitting areas situated around a fireplace or fire pit, alongside a pool and spa.

"Some outdoor rooms feature fully-equipped outdoor kitchens with counter space for food preparation, sinks, and even cocktail bars. In addition to a gas grill, these outdoor kitchens may also include pizza ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, and much more. To bring it all together, you can add landscaping, patio heaters, gaslighting, and decorative gas sculptures with fire and water features."

Wow, that almost negates the need for indoor rooms!

The helpful respondent from the company also passed on some additional useful information, if you're in the market for "outdoor room" gas features in Nevada: "You can advise your reader that they can contact our Energy Services department at 800/654-2765 for information on firepits, i.e. where to buy, styles, dealers and more."

Hope this helps!
