Question of the Day - 02 February 2010

Q:
On my recent visit to Vegas, I stopped at Slots-A-Fun to play $2 blackjack. This was at 8:30 in the morning. There was no one around except for a few at the slot machines. The tables were all covered. Is Slots-A-Fun closing?
A:

We didn’t think so, so we looked into it.

We found a blog reporting that on July 1, 2009, Slots-A-Fun would begin a re-branding process in order to be incorporated into Circus Circus.

Late on June 30, the blogger visited Slots-A-Fun, smallest casino on the Strip and located next door to (south of) Circus Circus, and was told that the casino would be closing "within the hour" as part of a merger with the neighboring Circus Circus.

The blogger was told that "the building will remain standing and remain open, but (supposedly) all of the chips, table felts, and signage will be changed. It was a little surreal to watch as the slot machines were all shut down one by one and the tables were emptied.

"As of July 1," the blog reported, "Slots-A-Fun will no longer exist."

Well, that wasn’t quite accurate.

What did happen? "For purposes of operational efficiency," according to MGM Mirage, the two separate gaming licenses at Circus Circus and Slots-A-Fun were merged into one license on July 1. The gaming chips were changed over and some signage was changed in order to comply with the new licensing structure; the new name is Slots-A-Fun at Circus Circus. But that’s all.

We took a quick peek inside and ascertained that other than the few cosmetic changes enumerated above, Slots-A-Fun is the same joint it’s always been. It has the one busy crap table, with $5 pass-line bets, by the front door, as close to the street as is possible while still being under the roof; a half-dozen blackjack tables with $2-$3 minimums; the venerable Snack Nook; the Subway and Noble Roman’s pizza outlets; the bar with cheap Heinekens; the handful of slot machines; and the side door with the walkway right to Circus Circus.

So, it’s business as usual at Slots-A-Fun (at Circus Circus).

Update 02 February 2010
Some feedback on today's: "Slots o' Fun is still there but the machines are almost all different from last spring when I was there, no coin in, coin out like before that I could find. Huge Wheel of Fortune that takes up much space. I went there for the atmosphere and the sound of the coins, but won't go back now."
