Question of the Day - 06 March 2010

Q:
I usually visit Las Vegas in March, but I have never been in town for St Patty's Day. Are there any special events or "hot spots?"
A:

To be sure, to be sure!

We confess it didn't come as a total surprise when it was recently reported that alcohol intake is up on the Strip. We may be in the clutches of a global recession, but that has not prevented Las Vegas from partying; on the contrary, we and our visitors are apparently drinking even more than usual, whether it be to drown our sorrows in these dark times, from a determination not to let things get us down, or else some kind of blissful ignorance. And who better to party with than the Irish? Heck, there's no way we'd let St Patrick's Day slip by without sinking a few green pints and a couple of (traditional, of course) Jell-O shots.

At the time of this writing, events were just beginning to be released (it seems to be an unwelcome habit of Las Vegas to play its cards increasingly close to its chest when it comes to such announcements. Perhaps this is because there's always some excuse for a party, so the poor PR people are like mice on wheels, lurching from one premiere to the next sporting highlight/celebrity visitation/grand opening/birthday party/national holiday. Barely are Valentine's Day and NASCAR week out of the way than St Paddy's Day's upon us, closely followed by the debut of pool-party season, easter, Earth Day, Memorial Day weekend, and whatever comes next. There's probably an element of people not wanting to be outdone by the competition, either, which would explain why so many venues seem to hold back and see what everyone else is doing before announcing their own plans.

Hence, with just over a week to go, we can guarantee that there are still events yet to be announced. However, we do already have a pretty good list of parties and other festive activities in our Special Events section; be sure to keep checking back for new announcments as March 17 draws nearer.
