Question of the Day - 12 May 2010

Q:
You noted in the May Las Vegas Advisor that the World Series of Poker will have some $550 tournaments available this year. On their web site, however, other then the Casino Employee $500 event, the lowest priced entry I found was $1,000. Can you elaborate on the $550 deal?
A:

The reason they're not on the tournament roster is because they aren't bracelet events. Rather, these are add-on tournaments being staged to spice up the action and provide an avenue for players who can't afford the higher buy-ins. No-limit hold 'em tournaments with $550 buy-ins will run at the Rio every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in June. The starting time is 1 p.m., so you should be there by noon to register and get your seat assignment. Each tournament will be concluded that day.

Of course, in addition to the reasons given above, these dailies have also been installed in response to competition from other low-buy-in tournaments that run concurrent to the WSOP at other casinos. These include the Binion's Poker Classic, with most events having $100-$200 buy-ins; the Golden Nugget's Grand Poker Series, with $225-$330 buy-ins; Caesars Palace's Mega Stack Series, with $225-$330 buy-ins; and the Venetian's Deep Stack Extravaganza with $340-$550 buy-ins.

Watch for more coverage at LasVegasAdvisor.com as poker month (June) approaches, including an amazing excerpt from Blair Rodman's next book that's packed with information illustrating exactly what you need to do to play in the WSOP. If all goes according to plan, we'll have it ready and posted some time toward the end of this month.
