Question of the Day - 17 May 2010

Q:
If I buy the stock of a casino company, will I get any perks, such as specials on rooms, meals, gambling, etc.?
A:

In short, no. One of LVA's contributors lives with a Wynn Resorts shareholder and the only "perk" she receives are invitations to annual shareholder meetings. However, if you are a holder of a massive number of shares (such as an investment), management might roll out the red carpet in the form of property tours, face time with top execs. and earnings previews.

Update 19 May 2010
A reader wrote in with some interesting feedback: "Question of the day--As a stockholder they offer me discounted room rates to attend the stockholder's meeting--should that be listed as a 'perk'??" Ed: We asked in which company he owned stock. "I have stock in a few of them--not sure which one sent me the latest offer--I think it was MGM/Mirage, but not sure...(It seems to me that their meeting is in LAS in early June). Since the stock is at about 10% of its value from a couple of years ago, I think that a discount on a room isn't much of a perk!"
