Question of the Day - 26 July 2010

Q:
I'm notoriously tough to buy for, but I love coming to Vegas. Do any of the casinos sell gift cards or gift certificates that people could buy for gifts?
A:

Here's a question we haven't been asked before, so we made a few calls, and here's what we found out.

All the bigger properties that we called -- MGM Resorts, Harrah's, Venetian, Wynn, Stations, for example -- have a gift-card program. The California downtown said no. Where a property does offer gift cards, you can find details on their websites. The options do vary a little from property to property.

For example, Wynn and Encore sell them online and at their box offices, starting at $50 and going up in increments to $500. Venetian/Palazzo gift cards are also available online or from the concierge desk -- note that this was the only instance we came across where a processing fee of $3.95 is added to the amount that you purchase the card for. There's a list online of where they can be used, but basically most dining and retail outlets, or against your room. The Golden Nugget sells them online and at the business ceneter.

The MGM Resorts International Gift Card is accepted at participating properties' merchant and restaurant outlets nationwide, but cannot be used to make reservations or advance purchases, such as show tickets or rooms. The Orleans doesn't sell gift cards, but you can purchase a gift certificate from the cage. It's only good for use on-property, not group-wide. South Point's gift cards are available for purchase in any denomination from front desk, gift shop, Spa Costa del Sur, Silverado Steakhouse, Courtyard Café, or Michael's Gourmet Room. You can also purchase them over the phone or online.

Are you an LVA member? If no, then have someone purchase you a subscription for your next birthday or Christmas present; if you are, have someone cover the renewal for you. It makes a great gift for any Vegas fan.
