Question of the Day - 27 August 2010

Q:
I remember being in 1973 in the downtown area and at one of the casinos they had a glass-enclosed elevator on the outside of the building. I remember this very well because I am afraid of heights. Can you tell me which casino this was?
A:

In 1973, that would’ve been the Mint Casino. Today, it’s Binion’s "west wing." The glass elevator runs from the casino on the first floor to the Ranch Steakhouse on the 24th floor of the old Mint tower.

Las Vegas also has eight other glass elevators.

The Rio's glass elevator goes up the south side of the big tower to the VooDoo lounge and restaurant. It's accessible only during the VooDoo Lounge's open hours.

The Palms’ 40-story tower hosts a Playboy Club on its top floors, with a glass elevator overlooking the Strip.

A glass-enclosed elevator runs to the observation deck of the Eiffel Tower approximately 500 feet up.

THEhotel has a glass elevator up to Mix on the 64th floor.

Palace Station’s glass elevator faces north, offering views of Stratosphere and the downtown area. It's restricted to hotel guests.

The Tropicana has one that goes to the top of the Island Tower. It overlooks the big pool area and, of course, you can see beyond, looking west at Excalibur and the Spring Mountains.

On the north side of the Las Vegas Hilton, a glass elevator overlooks the Sahara and Stratosphere. You can also see beyond to downtown. This elevator is unguarded and therefore open for public access.
